The grinder is well built and looks good. The biggest problem is that it wouldnt grind fine enough out of the box for expresso, other reviewers had same problem and added the included shims to close up the tolerance. Works fine now, but i would like it to work right out of the box.

Amazing, versatile, top quality grinder!
Had this for a little over a month and I love it. For context, I've only been using the stock burr set thus far and grinding espresso. The machine is built like a tank and ships in a pelican case with spare parts - very nice! The motor is powerful and extremely quiet. With proper puck prep, I get no channeling and as far as I can tell, a very consistent grind size. I love everything about it other than two things, which other reviewers have similarly pointed out. . . 1) the turret that you rotate to adjust the grind setting is a bit too easy to accidentally rotate/change the adjustment - I wish it required more effort to rotate - e. g. , more friction or a locking mechanism; and 2) the pull-down chute tends to spray a small amount of grinds back up the back side of the housing when it snaps back in place. #2 is a very small nit amounting to no noticeable retention/waste, but I've messed up a couple espressos not realizing that I must've accidentally touched the turret and shifted the grind setting - hoping Varia or a 3rd party come up with a solution to better lock down the grind setting. Everything else about the machine exudes top quality. There is nearly zero retention. I have never had an issue with popcorning beans, nor beans failing to fall into the grinder. Disassembly and reassembly are very easy and it returns to zero (i. e. , the indicated grind setting remains consistent with actual grind size after reassembly). The taste is great - I can make milk-based espressos that rival or beat my favorite gourmet cafes, although I'm not sure how much of a function that is of the grinder alone, or coupled with a Profitec Ride (which I also LOVE) that I use. Proper puck prep is also essential, of course (I use the WDT method). I highly recommend this grinder, although from my research, I imagine most espresso-only users could likely do just as well with the VS4 and save a little money.
