Stunning craftsmanship and surgical performance
My first impression when unboxing this knife was how stunning it looked. The high-polish finish and distinct Damascus pattern catch the light beautifully—visually striking but not textured, so it doesn’t create drag like Kramer’s stainless Damascus. The warm, blonde pakkawood handle paired with the satin stainless bolster and end cap looks and feels premium. Fit and finish are exceptional. You genuinely can’t feel where the metal stops and the wood begins. The handle’s size and proportions are excellent for my XL hands, and the bolster is contoured to naturally support a pinch grip. Out-of-the-box sharpness was phenomenal. It sliced cleanly through everything from tomatoes to fresh carrots with minimal effort. A lot of the knife’s “glide” is thanks to its thin blade—just 1.8 mm at the spine near the heel. That thinness, combined with a well-ground edge, makes for surgical performance. The blade profile is ideal for push and pull cuts, and it tap-chops cleanly as well. Rocking is limited due to the flatter profile, but it still works on smaller diameter foods like scallions, garlic, and celery. The handle stays secure even when wet, and the knife is easy to clean. It’s a pleasure to use for any prep job where a chef’s knife or santoku would be overkill. I can’t speak to long-term edge retention yet, but my other Shun Premier knives have held up very well with proper care—and I expect no less from this one. ⚠️ This is a precision tool, not a beater. Use proper technique, avoid bones and frozen foods, and pair it with a good cutting board (mine’s a Boos maple edge grain). If you need a knife that can take abuse, look to a Wüsthof or Zwilling. Overall, I’m thrilled with this knife. I’m still adjusting to the flatter edge, but I already find myself wanting the Premier Nakiri. Highly recommended.

A Work of Art
The blonde handle and Damascus Clad blade are beautiful. The knife cuts cleanly in one stroke. Its just a work of art.
