Very Balanced Bean for Espresso

This review of the Mystic Monk Blend is from the perspective of its use an espresso bean, with standard single shot ratio pulls and 1:4 ratio lungo pulls. The Mystic Monk Blend creates a very smooth, balanced expression. Consumed straight in a shot it has very subtle flavors, with the charred cedar and chocolate being the forward, and the finisher being baking spice and caramel. I would describe the progressive drinking experience as "delicate," with the flavors moving off the tongue quickly. While this will likely be disappointing if you prefer much stronger flavor profiles, it is very pleasant in the sense that it doesn't leave any astringency or bitterness sitting on the palate. The subtleness of the blend actually lends itself beautifully to be a base for adding other flavors into your cappuccino or latte (or preferred milk drink). It is not so delicate that the coffee notes are drowned by milk, but it also not so strong that it will overpower any additives, either. I have found it to be very pleasant in a macchiato, and my wife enjoys it in a cappuccino. The freshness of the beans is also wonderful to note. I've been working through a bag for about 2 weeks now, and they continue to produce a rich, thick crema that lasts in the cup for a surprisingly long time. I would recommend this bean to people that enjoy a more toned down dark roast, and in particular people who are just starting to experiment with espresso. It's subtleness and delicacy make it a very forgiving bean to experiment with!
