HIFIMAN Sundara Review – My First Step In The Audiophile Scene
I’ve been holding off on writing this review—not because I wasn’t impressed, but because I’m still fairly new to the audiophile world. I also wanted to give the HIFIMAN Sundaras a fair shot by waiting until I had a proper DAC and amp setup to pair them with.
Getting Started:
The Sundaras are my first pair of audiophile-grade headphones, and I spent a lot of time going back and forth on whether to buy them. After a good amount of research and hesitation, I finally pulled the trigger—and I’m glad I did.
Before these, I had only used a few entry-level IEMs from Amazon (around $50). They had decent bass but nothing special in terms of clarity or imaging. Jumping to the Sundaras was a night-and-day difference.
Sound Quality:
Right out of the box, the Sundaras impressed me with their open, clear, and natural sound—exactly what I was hoping for based on all the research I had done. I prefer listening without EQ, as I feel their stock tuning is well-balanced and pleasing.
This is also my first experience with planar magnetic headphones, and I now understand the hype. The highs are smooth and present without being piercing. The mids are clean and natural, and the bass, while not overwhelming, is controlled and accurate—just the way I like it.
Comparing Setups:
At first, I ran the Sundaras through my portable setup, which is an iPod Classic 7th Gen paired with the Oppo HA-2 DAC/Amp. While it worked, I found that setup to be a bit too bright and harsh for my ears.
Switching to my desktop setup made a big difference. I now use a Topping D10 Balanced DAC feeding into the Apos x Community Gremlin (a tube amp), and the pairing is fantastic. The Gremlin adds warmth and depth to the Sundaras without muddying the clarity, which balances them out beautifully.
Soundstage & Imaging:
The soundstage feels open, giving a nice sense of space around the music. Imaging is very good—instrument placement is accurate and immersive, though I do feel like this could improve slightly with future upgrades. Still, for the price point, it’s more than impressive.
Build & Comfort:
The Sundaras are lightweight and comfortable, even for long listening sessions. The suspension headband does a great job distributing weight, and while the stock pads are fine, I may look into upgraded pads in the future to tweak comfort or subtly shift the tuning. One flaw I found in the pair I received is one screw that keeps coming loose that holds the headband and the driver together but its not that big of a deal.
Music Experience:
I listen to a lot of bass-heavy music, ambient, electronic, and rap. The Sundaras handle it all well, keeping things clean, detailed, and never muddy. While they don’t punch like closed-back bass-heavy headphones, the bass they do offer is tight and realistic, not exaggerated.
That said, these headphones really shine in certain genres more than others. In well-produced music, acoustic tracks, rock, or anything with strong instrument separation and clarity, the Sundaras deliver a truly immersive and emotional experience. You hear the subtle nuances of each instrument, the texture of vocals, and the space between sounds.
However, with poorly produced or overly compressed tracks, or music that’s more synthetic and low-effort in production, the Sundaras can sound a bit flat—almost like listening on a basic pair of headphones. They're highly revealing, which means they reward good recordings but won’t mask the flaws of bad ones.
Final Thoughts:
The HIFIMAN Sundaras are a phenomenal entry point into the audiophile hobby. They deliver clean, spacious, and musical sound at a very competitive price. I did upgrade the cables for better aesthetics and durability, but even with the stock setup, these headphones are incredibly satisfying.
I’m giving them a 4/5, not because they fall short—but because I now realize there’s a whole world of headphones out there that may offer even more refinement or character. That said, for the price, the Sundaras are easily one of the best ways to start this journey, and I can already tell this is just the beginning of a deep rabbit hole!
