Throwback to Earlier Days. . . But Better
I'll admit I'm not using this cassette player for portable music use. I'm plugging it directly into my stereo receiver's tape inputs and using it as a component player. Why? Because I have 500 cassettes, all prerecorded, that are in mint condition, and many have albums on them that I don't have in any other format. Plus, this was much less expensive than buying a cassette deck, prices of which number into the $400-$500 range these days. First off, I don't think this replaces the Sony Walkman. There's no belt clip, and any self respecting device these days should Bluetooth to be compatible with the many headphones that proliferate the market. Why am I giving it 4 stars? Well, mainly because it lacks Dolby noise reduction. Plus it would be nice for it to have several modes to accommodate the various tape types, such as Chrome, Metal, etc. But I know that would just pump the price up, so at a minimum, Dolby C would be nice, as so many tapes of yesteryear were recorded with it. Otherwise, it's a fine little transport. I like the larger flywheel to reduce wow and flutter, and the build quality of this unit is really fine engineering. It could also use a small lever to pop the tape door open, but that I can live without. The sound overall is excellent. My first cassette listening experience on this unit was with Dead Can Dance "A Passage In Time", a compilation of earlier DCD songs. They sound phenomenal, with punchy lows, and nice crisp highs. For the price I'd highly recommend this player no matter what application you are using it for.
