P7 French Press Coffee Maker

Lovely upgrade

I love this French press because it is beautiful and functional. The only issue I have is that if you make a small amount of coffee it does not pour very well, but lifting the plunger a small amount and replunging seems to coax the remaining coffee out. Otherwise I really love it, and so do the coffee drinkers :)

I guess I bought into the hype. The coffee itself is good—clean and smooth, and the double-filter system does an excellent job. Unfortunately, the cleanup is another story. After the final pour, not all of the coffee drains from the pot. I literally have to leave it upside down in my sink (balanced on the side) for a couple of hours so the remaining liquid can slowly drip out and the grounds can dry enough to handle. Only then can I use a spoon or paper towels to remove the grounds and put them in the compost or trash. Otherwise, you're left with a muddy sludge at the bottom that's messy to deal with. Then there are the filters. They trap a surprising amount of coffee grounds. Your choices are either to shake them out—which sends grounds flying everywhere—or put a bag over the filters and tap them against the side of the sink to catch most of the grounds before washing them. Simply rinsing everything under the faucet isn't a great option because so many coffee grounds end up going down the drain, and we all know that's not good for plumbing. It's a clever design in some respects, and it does make an excellent cup of coffee. But for me, the cleanup outweighs the benefits. Sometimes the more expensive product with all the hype isn't necessarily the better choice.
