Flowered the first year for me
These Mexican hats flowered for me the first year even though the description says blooms in the second season. Planted out two seedlings, one grew really well, the other is still spindly but they're still both flowering now at the end of September in zone 7a in PA.

mex hat
Mexican Hat is not always easy to grow but fun when it does. My first experience with it was at a conference at Bernalillo, NM, grew outside hotel naturally. It's a native plant. Definitely not spectacular, but cute as can be and last several weeks.
