Sennheiser HD 800S Headphones

Ten years ago, the HD800S and HD820 stood as the ultimate $10,000 gatekeepers of high-end moving coil headphones—and even today, they still hold that status. While their resolution and dynamic performance can no longer match the advancements of modern bio-diaphragm moving coils, their signature musical character remains unchanged. For many enthusiasts, especially those who approach headphones with a speaker-listener’s mindset, this continuity is precisely what matters. Music serves as a vessel for personal emotion, and in that sense, these headphones retain their unique appeal. If sentimentality plays a role, they are well worth owning—and perhaps, a decade from now, they will be even more treasured.

Coming from an AKG 712 Pro, it was a natural upgrade path to the Sennheiser HD 800s. The sound is definitely more clear and crisp while maintaining an amazing soundstage. With some EQ, the bass can be brought up a bit to match the 712's sound signature. The default sound however is amazing and not fatiguing to my ears. The detail is enhanced compared to the 712s. I was able to focus on the different instruments and vocals in the song easily, while the 712s felt more muddled and blended in comparison. For gaming, footsteps and sound cues are just as clear as the 712s, which is already great. It is also breathable for long gaming and streaming sessions. Comfort wise, it is indeed almost as comfy and lightweight as the akg 712s. I can wear both sets of headphones all day without sweating. Definitely lighter than the Aryas I demoted and doesn't use the tight clamp of the HD 650 that gave me headaches. I see why the HD 800s has been so well regarded over such a long period of time. I will be using this as my daily driver, and maybe pair it with a headphone for bass in the future.
