Detailed directions and beautiful professional technique
One of the best patterns I’ve ever used! The directions were incredibly clear and easy to follow, despite the advanced techniques. This pattern used a method for welt pockets and vest side seams that I haven’t used before, and both resulted in a very clean finish. In some parts of the pattern, Bella included the “why” for a certain technique, which was incredibly helpful when, as an experience sewist, you might think you know what’s next or you question the methodology. I did make a toile, which was a little looser from the hips up. I should have graded down a size from the waist up, but I was concerned about a tight fit across the back. With the waist ties, it’s still a flattering fit - because there’s definitely no altering the finished vest!

Exceptional Pattern
The pattern was well drafted and the instructions were excellent. I did not need to make any modifications. I used a herringbone wool fabric for the vest and it looks beautiful. Would highly recommend this pattern.

Great design and fit
I used about half a metre of green Needlecord I had left from making a skirt. Not enough fabric to make the entire vest so I decided to use the lining as a back piece. I used silk organza to interline the back and give it body. I followed the instructions in full apart from the pockets which I decided to forgo; I also used a metal waistcoat buckle and jeans buttons.
The instructions were very precise but I ended up purchasing the video sew along when attaching the lining. The overall finish and fit was excellent, I did not need to make any alterations to the pattern which is unusual for me.
Will I make it again. Yes absolutely.
If I have one gripe and it’s only small, I found that the clarity of the photographs a little grainy when trying to work out whether I was looking at the right or wrong side of a seam allowance on some sections. Photographs are great but they are difficult sometimes depicting precise areas of construction.
This said, the Bennie Vest is a superb garment and looks great especially when teamed with the skirt I made in the same fabric. 10/10
