Men's Tarn Down Jacket by Katabatic Gear

High Quality Puffy

This puffy hoody has excellent warmth for how light it is. I love my Katabatic Gear quilt and this puffy seems to match it in quality. The shell is a thin 10D so I use it with care, but it is my go-to insulating layer for cool to cold weather backpacking. I'm 5"11" 155lbs, and tried Medium and Large. Both fit me pretty well, but I opted for the Large to accommodate adding more layers underneath. It also works over just a base layer, making useful in a modular thermal regulation strategy. The only thing I miss is an integrated stuff sack, but I find that acceptable given how light it weighs at 10 ounces. Overall, I highly recommend the Tarn.

Great build, odd fit

I’m 6’2”, 185 lb, and fit comfortably in a men’s large with most jackets. The large Tarn was restrictively tight in the chest and shoulders with only a thin base layer underneath. The extra large Tarn felt a couple of sizes larger than the large and was so long in the arms as to be impractical. I could not imagine an effective way to layer for winter hiking with either size. These are beautifully made jackets, much nicer than their big-name competitors and at an appealing price. I reluctantly returned both sizes and would definitely reconsider buying one if Katabic revised their fit. Grateful for GGG’s service! Fantastic company!!!

Amazing company, amazing product. Definitely too slim cut if you’re using this as a mountaineering or ski layer but for a thru hiker or biker in alpine areas you aren’t going to find a better puffy for this price, warmth and weight
