Rollins and Hawkins display awesome harmonic inventiveness and technical facility in this historic encounter. Sonny Meets Hawk! had not been issued in hi-res or DSD prior to this HDTT release. The sound quality of the 1999 RCA CD (stereo) and 2010 Pure Pleasure LP (mono) releases rank well below HDTT's remarkably vivid transfer. This album rises to the top of my collection of HDTT jazz reissues in DSD.

Improvising is risking

A listening experience of the two virtuosi as unusual as exciting. Surely not for everyone. The recording meets the high standards we are used to by HDDT, but the rhythm group and Bley's piano seems -to my ears and taste- too underexposed.
