I Wanted to Take Care of this Watch a Few Days before Gifting it
Thanks to the excellent photos and specs available on this watch, I was able to show it to my grandson virtually before purchase. I have been plotting this for a couple of years. He is still just nineteen so the timing was right. It finally hit me that a quartz crystal watch was not going to be the right choice for this young man. I started to toy with the idea of getting him an automatic. For an active, young athlete, having a waterproof watch is a must. I eagerly opened up the box and tested the crown by setting the time and date. Then I wound it up for the first time. I went slowly at first, winding it up more day by day. Now it seems fully operational. So the watch had some break-in time and good testing before I gave it to the kid.
As a teenager in La Jolla during the 1970s I was fortunate to have the opportunity to swim, skin dive and surf the clean, uncrowded beaches of that beautiful time of clear water and abundant tidal ecosystems. I went diving one day in 1975 when the visibility was a once-in-a-lifetime 70 plus feet. My parents were proud of me enough to give me a Zodiac Sea Wolf. That was the only automatic watch I ever owned.
Little did I know the quality of that particular model. I took it for granted. So I was a bit surprised when I realized my little Icon Automatic was gaining ten seconds a day. The lad did not seem to be worried about being a few seconds early. Neither did he shy away from the idea of correctly setting and adjusting the time constantly. He really loves it. I think that he sees wearing it as a statement.
I did have several Swiss Army watches I wore in the 1980s and 1990s. I found out the hard way that a jeweler cannot typically replace the battery without destroying the water resistance. Still I became quite accustomed to the nylon mesh and black leather watchbands. So when I saw that most of the modern Sea Wolf watches had the same type of linked stainless steel wristband faithfully recreated for the Icon Automatic i was very pleased.
I hope he gets several years of good service from this attractive timepiece.

Outstanding quality
The icon auto is an excellent addition to any collection. The miyota movement is a classic and the sleek contours of the icon, paired with the sub zero color scheme, make this watch well worth the money.
