Hardy vines and attractive fruit
We've had unusually warm and humid weather this summer, and this squash appears to LOVE these conditions. The vines are thick and lush, and they don't give off that melon/cucumber smell if they are touched; this has kept the squash borers away. The massive ruffled golden flowers are held high above the leaves, which makes it easy for pollenators to find them. Mine are setting fruit now (July), and the ones that are close to ripe are the size of small pumpkins. I hope to start harvesting and selling at market in the next few weeks. They are heavy feeders - I rototilled in some good compost before planting, and feed with a liquid fertilizer weekly. The only issue I've seen is a slight dusting of mildew on the leaves, owing to the high humidity. This hasn't hurt production, though.
