Ornamental and hot
I have grown many different types of hot peppers through the years but I always grow cayenne as the plants are very productive, ornamental, and the peppers give just the right amount of heat to so many dishes. They are hotter than most jalapenos but not near as hot as habanero. One chopped pepper adds just the right amount of heat for cooking a pot of greens such as cabbage, collards, or kale. I also love to add a chopped cayenne to stewed okra and tomatoes as well as spaghetti sauce or anywhere that you want some heat. The plants are so productive that I usually end up drying the peppers to use in the winter time and sometimes I have so many that I end up freezing bags of them for winter eating. One to two plants should be plenty for the average family that likes hot peppers. They also produce over a long period until frost kills the plants. They do grow rather tall over time so I always stake my plants with wire tomato cages (you know, the ones that are too small for tomatoes) or tie them to a bamboo or wooden stake to keep them from blowing over in summer storms. This is a popular heirloom hot pepper for good reason.
