Not Susanville, I think
I got my seed garlic in the fall, and it came stating it was Susanville, which I had ordered. I have grown it in the past, and it is a softneck. But when I broke apart the cloves to plant them, there was a small hardneck stalk in most of them. Planted them Nov 2 (zone 9) and decided to see. Now, May 11, they seem ready to harvest, leaves yellowing and drooping, and decent clove development. They all seem to have the beginnings of scapes, at least the stalk and bud. So I think I was right, it is a hardneck variety. Which makes me think I did not receive Susanville last fall, but something else, some early hardneck variety that does OK with a warmer winter. To compare, I also have a separate bed of Music, which is beginning to get scapes but is clearly not ready to harvest yet, at least 2 weeks or more to go.

susanville
so far so good. almost 100 percent came up. still pretty small, we live in usda zone 6, so it's pretty cold now. Still looking pretty good though for what I'm asking my garlic to do! My soil tends to be on the heavy side but it is well amended with well decomposed horse manure and some bone meal. Not mulched, my soil is heavy and can retain water!

Came in good time, packaged well. Planted them all. I got 3 kinds and planted over 100 cloves!
