Biochar, an amazing discovery
After years of reading about the charcoal-enriched soils known as «Terra Preta» in Amazônia, I decided last year to order a couple bags of biochar from Territorial. On one side of my hoophouse I spread the biochar over a 25-foot bed and dug it in. The 25-foot bed on the other side received no biochar. Both sides were given identical quantities of organic fertilizers (dried fish, seaweed, and bonemeal). On both sides I planted the same number and varieties of tomatoes (Primo Red and Glacier). All season both sides received identical watering and climate control.
At first I couldn't see much of a difference in either plant growth or fruit set. Then, as the season progressed, the tomatoes in the biochar bed began to pull ahead--and kept pulling ahead.
By season's end, the biochar bed had generated more than twice as many tomatoes. They were bigger, sweeter, and beautifully glossier. For months I shared with grateful family, neighbors, and friends.
The untreated bed? It declined to where I no longer bothered to harvest the puny fruits. In contrast, the treated bed kept producing surprisingly large tomatoes late into fall until finally I felt forced to cut the heat, albeit very reluctantly. I harvested the last tomatoes in November and ripened green ones through December. They were still large, glossy, and oh so beautiful.
I have since ordered more biochar from Territorial, enough to treat all the beds in another hoophouse for this year's 2026 tomato crop. Bed by bed I will be expanding the biochar treatment throughout the garden. It is an incredible find.
