Sichuan Chilli Chai

Comforting, Caffeine-Free, and Sparked with Sichuan

I love this high heat take on chai that feels a bit different from the usual spice blends. The rooibos base works well, it’s naturally sweet and smooth, and being caffeine free means the spices get to do all the talking. The standout for me is the warmth. The mix of Sichuan pepper, Timur pepper and chili gives a lovely tingling heat that builds gently rather than hitting all at once. It’s much more interesting than a standard ginger kick. That heat is nicely balanced by fennel and star anise, which add a cooling note, while the cardamom brings depth with just a hint of smokiness. A touch of orange peel at the end keeps everything bright and fresh. I’ve been drinking this while cutting back on alcohol and caffeine, and it’s been genuinely comforting. It still feels like a “proper” drink, warming, flavourful, and satisfying, rather than a compromise. I’ve already reordered. 😊
