Clips and some kind of trellis are absolutely necessary to maximize berry production with the Doyle blackberry plant. I use electric fence wire stretched between steel T posts. I space the posts every 7 ish feet and have about 30 feet of berries. There are 5 berry plants. I fertilize with Osmocote fertilizer and water at least 2X per week. It's the clips that make this system work. without the clips and trellis the plants put out horizontal canes and picking berries is difficult. At maturity I will have a "wall" of berries 7 feet tall X 30 feet long. Should be enough for a cobbler or two!
