My Take on the Samples and My Final Selection
Background: I have to give up coffee (stomach ulcers). I was preparing my own espresso and making an Americano. I enjoy the dark roast coffee beans. Goal: To find a Choffy roast that can replace my morning coffee. What I am looking for is a drink that provides a coffee-like experience. I drink my dark roast Americano black. Here are my thoughts on each of the samples. I brewed them all using a French press. I steeped each for about 4 minutes, then stirred them again and steeped another 4 minutes. By the way, I first tried the French Roast samples. They all were just a little too bitter for me. Ivory Coast: - This had a good mouth feel and seemed the least watery. - It was smooth to drink. - It has the best chocolate aroma of the four when brewing. - This tastes the most like dark chocolate. - It is not too bitter, and seemed to have a hint of sweetness. - I really thought I would like this one the best. But for me, it borders on being too chocolatey as a replacement for morning coffee. Ecuador: - While they are all thin (watery if you are thinking of a hot chocolate drink), this seemed the thinnest of the four. - It had a little bitterness to it. - The aroma was not bad. - I did not sense any sweetness. - It was somewhat "coffee-like" for me. (None are a coffee replacement.) - It left a little astringency in my mouth after drinking. Nigeria: - Thin, like the others. - Just a small hint of bitterness. - Not really chocolatey or sweet. - It has a slight chocolate aroma, not overpowering in any way. - It left no aftertaste. - It was easy to drink. Volta: - Thin, one of the thinnest to me. - Nice chocolate aroma. - Subtle taste of chocolate. - Not bitter or sweet. - No aftertaste. In General: - They are all thin. If you are thinking hot chocolate, they are not. I was not seeking hot chocolate, so that was not an issue. - I think they all need to steep a little longer than suggested. Final Selection: - Ivory Coast just seemed like it wanted to be hot chocolate. I love chocolate, and I love dark chocolate, but not as a breakfast drink. - Ecuador was a little too bitter, and it left my mouth feeling astringent. - Nigeria was not overpowered by any one thing. I could drink it without thinking about it being a chocolate-based drink. It was the easiest to drink for me. This was my choice of the four samples, and I will order more. - Volta is one I thought I might like, but it always seemed too thin for me.
