1 coat of roll on Ekopel

No one should expect to take a 100 yr old bathtub and turn it into a gleaming new one in a matter of hours, but I think that is the magic that is implied by Ekopel. However I believe this product is capable of something close to this expectation in skilled hands. My first try with the roll on was a fail. I followed the directions that came with the product. Directions did not mention doing 2 coats of primer….not enough material to do that anyway, so I did one coat. Watching videos later revealed that 2 primer coats are required. The finish coat resulted orange peel was not acceptable and I missed some spots…my fault. Cust. Svc suggested I sand it out, and even after sanding to 500 grit, of course it was still not smooth and shiny. I ordered a “one coat of finish” kit which took over a week to get. I added acetone to the mix and honestly the product went on the surface quite nicely and was much easier to work with. Since the material was thinner it tended to drip and run more, so I kept rolling over the drips as drying progressed. This seems to work but in hindsight I would have used a dry roller for that because I was just rolling more material on causing more drips or runs…all said and done it looks pretty good, smoothish, shiny with a few runs that seem to have happened after I walked away. Honestly it’s going to be hard to see the runs in normal light. I am confident the surface will be durable and presentable and that is what is important. Like any other building task it takes experience to yield a superior result. I don’t think one should expect perfection the first time. After my first coat I went back and watched many video demonstrations and picked up some good pointers. If I have a beef it’s the fact that directions shipped with the product don’t seem to be consistent with the company videos. Not sure that is a fair critique as it would be super difficult to insert every little pointer that might work for one person and not the other. Honestly if a person expects perfection, you are likely going to need experience. Either way it may be prudent to order up 2 kits or a finish coat kit so you are not waiting more days without the use of your tub. You can likely return un used un opened kits.

I am on my seventh and I think final coat of roll on Ekopel. I used four coats on the surround, and three on the tub itself. I believe that should do it.
