I appreciate these books show what a late friend went through. Tattoo on her arm, scars from 'operations'. Such a strong person to survive.

I like reading books about people from our historic past. Very well written. Could really get into their lives, feelings, etc

Having read and been gripped by ‘Beyond the Tracks’, I was keen to read the other 2 books in the series.
To say that you love a book like this feels totally inappropriate. The subject matter is so upsetting.
Michael’s story telling is excellent. He weaves together the different characters’ stories, drawing on real events and experiences from the time, including events that are not so well documented, and of which little has previously been written.
The reader becomes so invested in the characters’ lives. The subject matter which is often heartbreaking and harrowing, takes the reader goes through a roller coaster of emotions as the stories unfold. I could not put my kindle down; thinking just one more chapter, often late into the night.
I highly recommend this book and the others in the series. In fact I haven’t ever been disappointed with any of Michael’s books.
If you are interested in reading more about how lives were affected and the people of The Netherlands coped during WW2, I highly recommend The Orphans of War Trilogy too.
