Approximately 45 years ago, my parents purchased this model. When beyond its service life, I was delighted to discover it is still in production. Improvements since the original include using ceramic glass in place of tempered glass, removal of the wire mesh over the windows, and a broader/flatter pit area. The new models no longer have a damper. Apparently there were issues with misuse of the damper by owners that would cause chimney issues (creosote build up). Be advised that, in my opinion, this is NOT a heat appliance and is solely for ambiance. In extremely cold weather, it doesn't add that much heat to a large space. As I use it in a part time vacation residence, this is not a serious concern for my application. The lack of a damper causes heat loss when not in use. For this reason, I give it 4 stars rather than 5 stars. Also the installation instructions had some outdated information, and were less than clear in some sections. Notwithstanding my comments above, I think this is a good product and I would recommend it.
