Ahmad Jamal very sadly passed away last week at 92 playing beyond his 85th birthday. From the early 50s he established himself as a foremost Jazz pianist and composer, he developed a very distinctive prolific sound and touch very much in the classical music discipline only equated by Bill Evans, Miles Davis said “All my inspiration comes from Ahmad Jamal.” This live recording At The Blackhawk deserves to be far more known, its as good as At the Pershing and Alhambra sessions, the transfer is vivid, dynamic and his signature percussive style very beautifully captured, both bassist and drummer are equally prolific and the trio comes forward as a collaboration of like minded musicians, few moments of slight distortion probably from the original recording are present, the transfer is beautifully done by HDTT, wonderfully atmospheric, trying to fix these few moments would have caused more damage than good. Highly recommended at DSD128.
