My Italian Guitar Needed Italian Strings!
Several weeks ago I purchased a guitar built by master luthier Giacomo Guadagna. As is usual when optimizing a new instrument I began experimenting over the course of about three weeks with most of the usual top brands of strings most of which performed well enough. Not superlatively but acceptably well. Being Italian myself I began to develop the conviction that my new guitar had more to give with the right match and might even surpass its languid beauty of sound with strings produced in its country of origin. I was helped in this conviction by the knowledge that Giacomo was Sicilian but living in Florence and was probably well versed in the characteristics of the two leading Italian string manufacturers, Dogal (made in Venice)and Galli (made in Naples). Since I had run through testing with Dogal just satisfactorily it was but a logical step to treat Giacomo's wonderful guitar to Galli strings which, to my delight, were on sale at X Guitars. I ordered both normal tension and high tension nylon and also titanium and could hardly wait for their arrival. To make a long story a little shorter I settled on high tension nylon with a titanium third string. Confirming my hunch, not only was the improvement in sound and feel immediate but gradually increased on a daily basis while the strings settled in as Giacomo's guitar became acquainted, appreciative and elevated by a marriage that made a great guitar as exceptionally great as it could be. I am a happy guy!
