Tastes Like Home
I grew up as an Air Force Brat, traveling the world with my family. Mama and Daddy were from the southeast side of Atlanta back when Atlanta had two lane roads and no interstate. Somehow we always made it home for a visit with the relatives each summer, and often stayed with my Grandpa Rawlins. He would feed us meats from the fresh butcher's market just down the road; a haphazardly built structure that I'm sure had been there forever, its owner selling cuts from nearly every meat source imaginable. There were no preservatives, no hormones, no processing. Just a butcher and his wife making a clean living feeding the community where Grandpa lived. Imagine how it was for me then, some fifty years later, tasting the Hickory smoked link sausage from White Oak Pastures. It was like being transported back in time; the senses went into overload, the taste buds awakened to distant memories of childhood summers at Grandpa's, and I am quite sure that my tummy said thank you out loud. I served it up with a good old fashioned southern breakfast to my sister and daughter and they too gratefully feasted of that wonderful sausage. I cannot wait to try the other meats I purchased. It'll be like bringing home back, sitting in my Grandpa's kitchen as he fed us clean meats. I'm nearly through the book too - what a wonderful read. I'll be back to White Oaks Pastures one day soon to stay a while. Until then. . Thank you, thank you so much for what you do.
