I purchased this crankset to replace a very old Ritchey WCS/Shimano Octalink on a cyclocross bike which is now just a commuter. The FSA specs showed this one to be the same weight as the SL-K so I chose the Gossamer for half the price. It's just a commuter bike, after all.
The crankset went together easily, all the parts were there. It is significantly lighter than the crank I replaced and spins smoothly. I will be interested to see how long the bearings last being more exposed to the elements but it looks like they can be easily replaced. I would have liked the spindle to be 15 -20mm shorter, I've got lots of clearance on the chainstays and it moved my chainline out a bit. However after a couple months of riding it shifts fine and I can get the big ring - big cog without any problem, so the wider setup works okay.
It definitely does not look as nice as the SL-K, which I suppose is the selling feature of that crank. There is a plastic cover over the big ring which is a bit cheezy, but it's a really well made bit of plastic, fits tightly and doesn't move around or make noise. Maybe a faux-carbon look would have made me feel better about it.
So, if you have to have the carbon arms, definitely get the SL-K, otherwise the Gossamer crankset is a very well made and functional crankset. For under $200 it seems like a great deal and was a big upgrade for my fine riding commuter bike.
