So helpful.
I was regularly disappointed with my cello’s sound and kept doing things like changing strings and putting on wolf tone dampeners to get the sound to be less harsh. One time when I got my cello back from the luthier, the cello sounded great, so I knew it was possible to get a good sound. The next time I brought my cello to the luthier, it was too harsh, too “metallic” with the tailpiece they put on. I decided I needed to do my own setup work since it would require changing settings, testing the sound, changing settings, etc. I am a handy person and I’ve changed out the tailpiece before, so I thought I’d take the dive and get this. I changed my tailpiece back first to the ebony one - better sound. Then I adjusted the soundpost - slightly farther away from the bridge and slightly closer to the bass side - just a couple of millimeters adjustment at a time (first loosening the strings). I got the soundpost in the perfect spot and am very happy. Now the only thing that would negatively affect my sound is my technique. :-)
