Seeds seem tough to get going but once planted and established, very productive

Although the seeds germinated

The seeds were started inside in a tray. They all germinated, but (despite following a slow transition to outdoors and providing protection) all of the plants died. I really wanted eggplant, so I tried direct sow and again they germinated but none of the plants survived.
