Great antennas except the rubber tip covers

I am running the dual 3’ Firestik antenna kit that comes with the RG59u 18’ cables. The only issue I had was the red caps will not allow a good SWR regardless of the position of the tunable tip. I followed proper procedure: tune metal tips, replace rubber cap, check SWR, repeat. I could not get better than 3:1 with rubber tips in place. I have excellent ground and placement, plus the cabling is not coiled incorrectly. Without the rubber tip covers I got a great SWR of 1.1:1 on channel 20 and I get 1.3:1 On channels 1 and 40. I decided to paint the metal screw tips with black paint and left the rubber tips off. Rechecked SWR, no increase, so I called it good. Radio checks say loud and clear and I have about 4 mile range. Google this and you will see others have had tuning issues with the rubber tips on.
