Break too easily

I'm very disappointed in these scales. I liked having the full set, but they all break too easily. The plastic cap at the top pops off, or the wire handle comes out, and it is impossible to get back in. If anyone has any tips to keep these working, I would appreciate it. If not, I'll need new spring scales.
