Handles the Heat
In the middle of a scorching Kansas summer, Nero di Toscana Kale is handling heat in the hundreds with erratic rainfall. After a wet spring it has continued to grow through a dry summer with only occasion watering. I came back from vacation in mid July to find a sad landscape of heat stressed plants. Nero di Toscana Kale was one of the healthiest survivors. I picked off some lower leaves that had insect damage, watered the area deeply and now there is new growth filling in from the central stalk. Good flavor and tender leaves for salads when picked on the small to medium size.
