Scrapyard Builds
I’ve done the testing and am very happy with the results, I use surfacing bits to flatten my hardwood glue ups and so far this tool is doing a great job, I’m running a Shapoeko 4 with the makita router motor and can usually run on #3, 18000 rpm, this tool also leaves less tool marks as well. I previously used the 4 tooth surfacing bit and this one is much better. I’ve also run some hardwood glue ups with epoxy on my magnetic knife holders and it cuts thru fine without over heating the resin.

I am not sure - part 2
Hi All, I originally rated this a 3 because I had serious vibration problems from the outset...hence I was not sure. Garrett reached out and helped troubleshoot the issue. We discovered the issue was a manufacturing defect in the carbide insert creating a balance situation that really is only noticeable when spinning at a high rpm or through a magnifying glass. Luckily I had purchased additional inserts replaced the old with the new and surfaced a sugar maple plank without an issue. What was once a board that was getting in my way became a beautiful foundation for my next piece. The bit worked better than my expectations with no burning on this very hard piece of wood. Therefore it gets a 5 rating in place of my earlier 3.

1" Indexable insert surfacing bit.
I really love the bit. It cuts great. I recently had to resurface my spoil board because I had some lumber that was about .002 thinner in some places and I didn't catch in time. Hind site is great, I should have used the spoilboard as a reference, but use the wood surface instead. Well.... I had some lines that went into the spoilboard. I have some good wood patch and filled all of the holes and then ran my spoilboard routine. It only cuts down .001 on the pass. I used about a 80% stepover and got no lines that were visible or by touch. With the 1/4" shaft, it would be great to have a single or double flat on the shaft - well out of clamp range to connect the alligator clip for auto Z calibration. I use a lot of 1/8" bits so my clip is not the largest in the world but will still work for 1/4" shafts. I have a set of lathe tools that one of the chisels uses that same square bit.
