A Treasure
At 81 this spring, I have loved and carried MARIMEKKO canvas bags for 55 years. (Also I have enjoyed a few of the recent polyester ones, to be honest. ) All through my career as a professor, and on all travels for work and or play, this was and is my brand for bags. In various sizes, they meet all uses…even cosmetic clutches are great for dressing up, day or night. Got the picture? So when this line of “Metros” came on the scene, I could and would not resist! I own a couple of the original cream-colored ones, in two sizes. I craved more of those and also subsequent patterns, but I no longer need such luscious possessions, nor as a pensioner now, can I afford more than one or two. But when I saw this denim Unikko version, the die was cast! When it arrived, very promptly btw, I knew I had done myself a great turn. Mine is the large sized one, very spacious, but not clumsy as a handbag. Perfect also as a tote or shopper, not conspicuous. There are two sets of handles, and gathering the top of the bag with the cords that are provided is what comprises the bag’s closure. Very sophisticated! At first I was skeptical there is no zipper, but objects stay in place just fine. (A little sense is needed, but even with a zipped bag, I for one do not shoot goals on the subway. ) As for the denim…perfect shades, good balance in the pattern, and a sturdy weight. This one is hard to beat, even by Marimekko!
