Pocket Athens - Book

Handy and Practical

Travel Guides have a lot of competition these days with all the blogs and other online information available as well as the ever increasing AI travel planning tools. I found this Pocket Guide to Athens a useful tool during several phases of my trip. As an introduction focused specifically on one city, it provided the overview I wanted, without being overwhelmingly exhaustive. I also appreciated the straightforward tone and cultural insights typical of Lonely Planet. While I no longer navigate by paper maps, I unfolded the one from the book, and pinned it to the wall in the weeks ahead of our trip. I marked the location of our accommodations and the key sights and neighborhoods we wanted to explore, using some of the books smaller maps of suggested walks. It was fun to anticipate our trip and begin to get the map in my head. Once traveling, the book was small and light enough to tuck into any pocket or purse. During our trip, I mainly consulted it for dining recommendations or additional insights on places we considered seeing. Here, the organization around neighborhoods, subdivided into accommodations, dining, attractions, and safety/logistical tips made it easy to use. Once returned, the book has become a souvenir and a nice glossy edition to my collection of travel books.
