My First Purchased Jig

I love how this puts dowels in on an angle, it gives the dowel more coverage in the joint making it much stronger. I blew out my first joint driving the dowel in, so now I know I need to keep everything clamped, even with the CA glue joint. There are few directions that go along with the tool. Do the holes through the sides serve a purpose, or are they just a production cost measure?
