Dahlias DO grow in zone 8A
These are beautiful right now-October 5. They get about 6-7 )hours of sun and they love it. Ball dahlias are easier to grow here, I think, but my Bushop of Canterbury dahlia is also happy. The shade in the afternoon is the trick in zone 8A as I have tried to grow them in full sun which is only moderately productive.
