Good creditable performances with excellent engineering
I've been (unreasonably?) hesitant to invest time listening to these Texas Music Festival Orchestra recordings. Well shame on me! I was quite taken by this recording on first listen; "charmed" actually. The quality of the playing is quite high and the sonics are very good notwithstanding being PCM in a lower resolution than HDTT releases typically indulge us. The arrangement of "Death and the Maiden" for full orchestra by András Vass works surprisingly well. Both of the Schubert works ("Death and the Maiden" and "Rosamunde Overture") are played by the orchestra with good control, ensemble and spirited elan. The Hindemith does seem just slightly beyond their interpretive grasp, but they do a creditable job nonetheless.
John Proffitt's sound engineering is excellent in the stereo version to which I'm listening. He captures the orchestra with very good resolution of inner detail, overall transparency, and excellent dynamics. I should know by now to trust Bob Witrak's ears and musical sense. I encourage you to do so, as well.
