Becoming another Hohner classic
For years I've had an old-style C Golden Melody (542) that hasn't been played much. Being mostly a blues player, I lean toward just and compromised tunings. E.g., my kit is mostly Hohner Rockets and Rocket Amps. But after reading and seeing all-over-the-map reviews of the now three-year-old new Golden Melody (544) I decided to pick one up for comparison. This time a Bb. So for starters, equal temperament tuning? Try this for your ear: Draw the 8 and 9 holes over a I chord, i.e., the fifth and flatted seventh scale steps in your key. A real difference between the Golden Melody and any compromised harp you may have. Really stands out, and not necessarily in a good way. But: I can pretty much guarantee that no non-harpist in your audience will ever come up to you after a song and ask why you played it with an E.T.-tuned harp. (And maybe one out of every three harp players in your audience will actually notice.) Comfort? Some have complained about the new model's feel, being a bit meatier than the old model. To me, any harp can be made comfortable, and I actually like the new shape. And that "look" when facing the back of the harp? Folks have compared the new model to the grill of one of those ill-fated 1948 Tucker automobiles. Nope. I believe Hohner actually designed it by taking the rear end of a 1963 Chevy Impala and duplicating it right-side-up for the top coverplate, reversed for the bottom. A fun, distinctive look. Playability, tone and quality? As good as any Hohner Marine Band-style harp. What about the Torx screws? Soon that'll be the standard for all Hohners, so no biggie to add the right driver to your tool kit, and the screws will be less likely to strip in the future. Bottom line: In a few more years the old style will be the collectible eBay antique and the new style will be the classic. Props to Hohner for innovation.
