Merrill Men's Black Hooded Leather Jacket

For the money this jacket is great value. It is not perfect, thus 4 stars rather than 5, but the shortcomings are really knit picking and based on my personal preferences. The collar closure is a little too stiff and sticks up in your neck or face unless you actually close it. I am hoping that the leather softens over time and this will eventually hang a little more naturally off to the side. To be clear, the leather is very soft, it is just fabricated into a closure with a snap in this area, so the many layers of material make it quite stiff. This is likely a good thing in terms of quality if you plan to use the closure. The dedicated pocket for your phone on the inner left side is actually a little too narrow to accommodate my phone in it's case. It is also much deeper than it needs to be so if you put your phone in there it will likely be somewhat difficult to retrieve as it will sit well down inside a very narrow pocket. Making this pocket a little wider and a little shallower would greatly improve its usability. To overcome this I just put the phone in the main internal pocket just above it. This is just fine, but sort of negates the benefit of having the "extra" phone pocket if it can't really be used as such. A nice touch is that there is another internal pocket on the inside right of the jacket. These 3 internal pockets make for 7 in total with 2 zippered pockets for your hands and 2 zippered pockets on the outside at chest level. Plenty of storage. Due to their placement, I will say that the pocket spaces overlap so you sometimes have a thick bulge where your glasses in the chest pocket are laying over top of your car keys in the pocket for your hands. I think the hand pockets could and should be located lower on the garment and the internal pockets should be slightly higher than their current placement. That small change would make the use of the hand pockets feel more natural and eliminate the overlap when you have items in both places. Another small complaint is that the main zipper on the body is the same weight as the pocket zippers. It is adequate, but should be a little beefier due to its constant use. It is also a little fussy to get started because of how fine it is. A heavier zipper would just be easier to use, improve durability and fit the "look" a little better. Lastly the sleeve opening is adjustable by a 2 position snap strap. Unfortunately, the strength of the snap closure is inadequate. It absolutely would not hold when I tried the narrower fit location, but even in the "natural" standard opening location the snaps are letting go and leaving the strap flapping around at the end of my arm. I am not certain how to remedy this, I may end up just removing the strap altogether which is not ideal, but would solve the problem. They might even replace the jacket if I complained about this, but there is no guarantee that the next one wouldn't be exactly the same. I don't think it is defective, I think it is just inadequate. Overall it is a very comfortable and nice looking product. I am satisfied with my purchase.
