SCM Minimax FS 30C - Xylent 12" Jointer/Planer

A Superb Jointer-Planer Combo That Delivers Professional Results

The SCM FS 30C-X is an outstanding machine and an ideal choice for small shops. The castings and fittings are top-notch, and the Xylent cutterhead handles cherry, ash, and other hardwoods with impressive speed and clarity. The fence is rock-solid yet easy to remove, and the changeover process is quick and intuitive—Sam Blasco’s video demonstrates this perfectly. For mobility, the machine pairs flawlessly with Zambus Carrymaster AC-300S Light & Medium Duty Stem Leveling Casters, which I highly recommend. I also own the SCM Formula 440, which has been excellent as well, and which I installed the Carry Master casters. A couple of small drawbacks are worth noting. The U.S.-required OSHA guard, while compliant, reduces the effective cutting width to just under 12", which may matter for wider stock. Additionally, the fence stiffening rod works as intended, but its attachment feels somewhat like an afterthought compared to the otherwise refined engineering throughout the machine. SCM’s customer service can be a bit uneven at times, but their shop expert, Sam Blasco, is exceptional. His knowledge of these machines is unmatched, and his guidance and suggestions are invaluable. Overall, despite a few minor compromises, this is a superb jointer-planer combo that delivers professional performance in a compact footprint.
