It seems like a great idea and the woodpeckers do like it but the can cling to the side. Birds like the cardinals, who sit on a perch to feed, do not like it because the base is not big enough for them to land and sit on. Plus in these cold sub freezing temps, the thing is frozen solid and most of the birds are unable to get anything off of it. We went back to our traditional sunflower seed feeders until the weather warms up a little.
