Hermann Oak® Holster Leather Sides

I've bought a lot of leather. I've been a knife maker since 1982 and I make my own sheaths. I have always been told to buy 8oz to 9oz veg-tan double shoulder, that this would be the best for knife sheaths. Usually I buy from Tandy Leather so that I can visit the store and pick through the leather. This last order, I decided to try Weaver Leather. After looking through your website, I got the impression that Herman Oak veg-tan was a superior leather. So I decided to call your customer service before ordering. The lady that answered didn't seem to know any more than I did, but agreed that the Herman Oak would be a better quality leather. After receiving the leather, I was disappointed! Probably one of the worst pieces of leather I've bought in years. The lady had led me to believe that the back would be nicely finished. However, I did not find it to be any better than the leather I normally buy. It had lots of stretch marks and blemishes that I would have to cut around. If I had been looking at leather in Tandy Leather, I would have passed on this one. I have thrown the box away, otherwise I would be returning the leather.

I normally use the basic veg tanned shoulders for my sheaths but decided to see if Herman Oak was really worth it. I am happy to say it is! Tools great, finishes beautifully with a little oil, and keeps its depth even when it’s bent.
