Like most trees I've received from Everglades Farms, the actual amount of growing medium around the root ball was sparce. They topped off the pot with medium such that the root flare was a good 2 - 3 inches below. Since most nurseries don't use proper mineral based media, the "soil" level continues to drop as the wood products break down. I learned the hard way to check this upon receiving any plant after having lost several to stem rot. Growers should remove the plant from the pot and add additional medium below the root ball to avoid this issue most nurseries are too lazy to do this. It took a few weeks for the tree to recover but it has started pushing new growth.
