They work really well

I sharpened an old 10.5" khukuri chopper machete I have with this rod. I'm a newbie so I only got it paper slicing sharp (no shaving edge but) It was my first time ever seriously trying freehand sharpening and I started on one of the hardest recurve blade types. As I get better this rod gets better! I used it dry right out of the box starting with the coarse and moving up through the medium through the fine. I didn't count strokes I used the feel of everything such as the feel of the angle touching/matching the factory bevel (had a little trouble maintaining the angle as perfectly as I'd like because I wasn't constantly watching it like I should've but I'm working on it) and the feel of resistance to/friction of the sliding of the rod. I would repeat on the friction spots with moderate pressure until they were sliding smoothly and then move up the blade to try to even it out in smoothness once they were decent. I can't wait to get better but this rod is totally good for the field!
