Short and to the point – sweeps and submissions from shin and side shin guard
This instructional teaches the shin and side shin guard, which when classed using distance to the opponent, as an intermediate GI guard. The instructor, Ryan Gruhn states that the instructional teaches material that is offensive in nature (i.e., sweeping or submitting). The instructional has the following structure: firstly a warmup drill, then teaching in detail the position and grips of the shin guard; a quick visual of different types of triangle chokes; multiple entries to the shin guard; a range of practical sweeps to use depending on the posture of the opponent; submissions using the shin and side shin guard (i.e., kimura, inverted armbar, americana, shoulder lock variant using your legs; inverted reverse triangle, toe lock, and inverted triangle); and the balance of the instructional is bonus material filmed at a separate time covering the shin and side shin guard. The instructional has a total run time of 44 minutes. Ryan Gruhn speaks and demonstrates the techniques clearly. Demonstrations are repeated generally from a couple of angles. Ryan Gruhn does not stray from the topic and this is an easy instructional to rewatch multiple times. There are no notable issues with sound or video quality and it has been filmed in a training facility. The preview (lasso shin sweep) and trailer are consistent with the balance of the instructional. In summary, if you have an interest in the shin and the side shin guard this is a good instructional to purchase. The techniques are not complex and once practiced you should be able to incorporate them into your rolls. From experience the sweeps work well when performing them on larger opponents and training partners. Note the importance of lifting their leg when sweeping.
