Suggested mallets for a Chinese 32” wind gong
I spoke with someone at Gongs Unlimited explaining that I had just acquired a new 32” Chinese wing gong and asked what mallets would work well for this gong in addition to the mallet that came with the gong. They suggested three mallets with varying hardness and four friction mallets which I purchased from GU. They arrived quickly and the selections were perfect for our gong. It is amazing how many different pleasing tones that are produced from this gong. Playing the gong is addictive. Our guest also enjoy playing while visiting. We also are pleased for the instructional videos on the GU website and YouTube. It is good to hear how other style gongs sound and how they are played. Thank you Gongs Unlimited for steering us in the right direction on mallets.

Acoustic percussion gong mallets
I play a 40 inch wind gong primarily and I suppose because of the sheer weight and thickness of the bronze it’s not uncommon to hear a contact “sound” of the mallet stroke. Based on the useful Gong‘s Unlimited video demonstration for these mallets they seemed like a good choice for regular playing as well as rolling crescendos etc. And they are! They suit me just fine. The contact sound I find minimal on this heavy gong due to the yarn covering and the weight and firmness. Their video for these mallets is really smart as they demonstrate the sound on different styles of gongs so I was quite happy to see that they used a wind gong in a portion of the video. Andrew and Company kind of rock if you don’t know!
