BEST REEL EVER
The Shimano SpeedMaster 25 II is a robust two-speed lever drag reel that strikes an impressive balance between performance, durability, and value, making it a solid choice for serious saltwater anglers. Designed for offshore fishing, this reel sits comfortably between Shimano’s entry-level TLD series and the premium Talica line, offering high-end features at a more accessible price point. Out of the box, the SpeedMaster 25 II feels sturdy, thanks to Shimano’s HAGANE Body, a rigid metal frame that minimizes flex under heavy loads. This construction ensures that the reel maintains alignment during intense battles with big fish, whether you’re targeting tuna, kingfish, or deep-dwelling species like grouper. The reel’s two-speed system is a standout feature, with a high gear ratio of 5.2:1 for quick retrieves and a low gear of 2.3:1 that provides substantial cranking power for stubborn fish. Switching between gears is smooth and intuitive, achieved with a simple button press and lever flip, which is a game-changer when you need extra torque mid-fight. The drag system, featuring Shimano’s Cross Carbon Drag, is smooth and adjustable, delivering up to 44 pounds of drag pressure, which is more than sufficient for handling large pelagic species or bottom fish. The inclusion of a spare drag cam for monofilament lines is a thoughtful touch, allowing anglers to fine-tune the drag curve for specific fishing scenarios, such as targeting tournament billfish. The reel’s line capacity is generous, holding approximately 500 yards of 15kg monofilament or 820 yards of 65kg braid, making it versatile for both live baiting and deep dropping. In terms of usability, the S-Compact Body design reduces the palming side plate’s size, enhancing comfort during long fights, though some might find the lack of harness lugs a minor drawback for extended battles with larger fish. The S A-RB bearings and CoreProtect technology provide excellent corrosion resistance, ensuring the reel holds up in harsh saltwater environments, though regular cleaning is recommended to prevent pitting on the metal finish. Casting performance is another strong suit, with the Super Free Spool system minimizing friction for smooth, long casts, which is ideal for techniques like jigging or live-lining. However, the spool can be prone to overruns if not carefully managed, so anglers new to lever drag reels may need a bit of practice. One minor critique is the plastic drag lever, which feels less premium than the metal components found on higher-end models like the Talica. While it’s functional and durable for most applications, it may inspire less confidence for anglers pushing the reel to its limits. Additionally, the reel’s finish, while sleek, can show wear over time if not meticulously maintained. Overall, the Shimano SpeedMaster 25 II is a versatile, hard-working reel that delivers exceptional performance for its price. It’s an excellent option for anglers seeking a reliable, multi-purpose reel for offshore adventures, from trolling to deep dropping, without breaking the bank. Whether you’re battling a 100-pound tuna or dropping baits for snapper, this reel has the power, smoothness, and durability to get the job done.

A bit wider spool than the 2 size 8’s that I have Also it’s a great casting reel. I recommend this reel to anyone who is looking for a 2 speed.
