London to Los Angeles: St. Louis Trilby Travels Well
The Lock & Co. St. Louis Trilby is a thoughtful and quietly distinctive warm weather hat whose strength lies in its balance. It is more refined than a casual straw hat, yet not so formal that its uses become restricted. In social settings, I have received favorable comments specifically about the texture and weave. People tend to notice that it looks considered rather than loud, which is precisely the effect I prefer. As my preference is for a trilby with a slightly larger brim, the proportions of the St. Louis are well judged. The 10 cm crown gives the hat architectural presence, while the 7 cm brim provides useful outdoor coverage without becoming exaggerated. When I first held my newly acquired St. Louis, I was immediately pleased with the weight as it reassured me that this was not a flimsy summer hat. Once placed on my head, the hat’s weight settles into comfort rather than burden. The result is a hat that feels breathable and easy to wear, but still built with structure, integrity, and purpose. How I define purpose is that this beautifully crocheted summer trilby is well-suited for real warm-weather life: walking, traveling, and moving through the day with composure. The St. Louis’s muted beauty derives from the crocheted straw which does not present as a flat, uniform color. Instead, it shows variation: tan, wheat, and honey tones that subtly shift depending on light and angle. From a distance, the hat appears clean and composed, however, up close, the weave reveals a layered, textured surface. That depth gives rise to character. The slight irregularities in the weave, combined with the darker straw tone, prevent the hat from being mistaken for a generic and mass-produced summer hat. The navy grosgrain band keeps the St. Louis from feeling too casual. It gives the textured straw a clean, composed finish, allowing the trilby to be donned in the relaxing atmosphere of the Southern California sun but still properly dressed for less carefree occasions. What makes the St. Louis Trilby especially easy to wear is that it speaks the same language as a well-built Southern California summer wardrobe. It pairs quite nicely with navy and mid-blue jackets, white or light-blue shirts, cream or stone trousers, olive or khaki chinos, and brown leather shoes, belts, or bags. Picture it with a navy linen blazer, pale blue shirt, cream trousers, and brown suede loafers; or with a mid-blue sport coat, stone trousers, and cedar-brown shoes. Since it’s arrival this spring, my St. Louis Trilby has quickly integrated into a high rotation among my other warm-weather hats. It has enough depth to reward closer attention and enough character to remain memorable without ever feeling overstated. On the practical side, it performs quite well during the sunny and warm Southern California days. I truly appreciate and love the look, feel, and adaptable style of my St. Louis Trilby.
