The mat most definitely keeps the washable granules from being scattered in other places around the house. It's also easy in that you can pull the mat out and pour the captured granules back into the Cat Genie

We had it up and running and have been using it for two days now however we haven’t quite figured out how to make it run all the time every time the cat uses it. I need to go in and press the button so it runs again.
