The Painted Bird Blu-ray

“The Painted Bird” is visually stunning with gorgeous, vibrant black and white imagery. It is a largely faithful adaptation of the novel with the same powerful and troubling scenes. One problem I had is that almost all the text on the Blu-ray box is in “cesky” which Google translate tells me is “Czech.” If I were buying “The Painted Bird” in a store, I would look to see if the film had English subtitles since I don’t speak the Czech language. Under the category “titulky” (subtitles), it says “anglicke” which is the Czech word for “English,” so with Google Translate’s help, I can see that the film has English subtitles (although Google Translate is confused by the word “anglicke” and thinks it is a Slovak word rather than a Czech word – Google Translate says that “anglicke” in Slovak means “anglicke” in English, which doesn’t help unless you correct Google Translate by telling it that “anglicke” is actually a Czech word, not a Slovak word - in that case, you learn that "anglicke" is "English"). So, I would suggest that, if the packaging for “The Painted Bird” is ever revised, that instead of using the Czech words for the different subtitle languages, it would be better to use the word in the native language to describe the names of the subtitle languages, such as “English” instead of “anglicke” or “Française” or “Français” instead of “francouzske” because that would make it much easier for a native French or English speaker who didn’t know “cesky” to determine that the film included subtitles in their native language. This may seem like a minor point, but it could easily lead to someone deciding not to buy the film because they couldn’t easily determine whether or not they would be able to understand the dialogue in the film.
